History and Benefits

Yoga began in India over 5,000 years ago. Translated from Sanskrit, yoga means union of the mind, body and spirit. The practice of yoga provides a way to calm the mind and reconnect with the body and spirit. This is accomplished by practicing asanas (physical postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises).

Benefits:

  • Greater concentration
  • Inner stillness
  • Patience
  • Increased flexibility
  • Re-balancing of all bodily systems
  • Better posture

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese form of “moving meditation” and relaxation. As a rejuvenation exercise, it promotes healing and stress management as well as increasing memory and concentration. Tai Chi helps improve joint flexibility, muscle strength and balance. Students will learn movements coordinated in a flow of effective, simple exercises and can benefit from this healing form.

Benefits:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Enhances mind and body coordination
  • Improves cardio-respiratory fitness
  • With continued practice, it maintains improved physical, emotional, and mental health
